Bad Conditions in Janow Podlaski

Since the Polish PiS government ordered the dismissal of director Marek Trela in February 2016, the signs for the Janow Podlaski Stud have been in decline. Within just four years, four new directors were hired and released. Some were not horse people, others were not managers. Nobody could even come close to the former heyday.

In May, MP Dorota Niedziela and Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska (Civil Coalition) visited the Janów Podlaski Stud Farm as part of a parliamentary intervention and presented the deficiencies that were found and, in their opinion, serious. The stables had not been mucked for 5 months, the hooves had not seen a farrier since August 2019, which was a problem especially for the young horses. It was also not clear whether the horses were vaccinated and dewormed. An earlier inspection revealed that there was no high-quality feed. A sack of oats was weighed, but it only weighed about 30 kg instead of 50 kg, because it was a lot of chaff instead of oats. The hay was also of poor quality. In particular, the situation of around 600 dairy cows and their calves, whose mortality is above the Polish average, was also criticized.

Dorota Niedziela, who is also a veterinarian, and Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska, who is a rider, blame Grzegorz Czochański for this condition. He was head of the stud farm from March 2018 to April 2020. Marek Gawlik took over this position in April.

According to his own statement, the Minister of Agriculture, Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, responded immediately when such and similar messages reached him and he had the situation checked, and if necessary there would be personnel consequences.

There was a surprising announcement yesterday when it became known that Anna Stojanowska was taking on a consultancy role at Janow Podlaski Stud. The new president Marek Gawlik had asked for it. At the stud, she only advises on questions of horse breeding, said Anna Stojanowska according to an article in “Dziennik Wschodni” on May 26th. This affects, among other things, the selection of breeding horses and the entire herd management, as well as the selection of horses for sale.
Anna Stojanowska worked for the ANR (now KOWR) for many years until 2016 to oversee the Arabian stud farm, working closely with the directors Marek Trela and Jerzy Bialobok.
