Happy Birthday – Dr. Hans-Joachim Nagel

Dr. Hans-Joachim Nagel and his wife Nawal

On August 7th, the mentor of the Straight Egyptian horse, Dr. Hans-Joachim Nagel celebrated his 90th birthday at his Katharinenhof stud in Großenkneten.

Born in 1930, Hans-Joachim Nagel studied economics and implemented large agricultural projects in the countries of the Near and Middle East in the 1950s. A good measure of thirst for adventure, curiosity and fascination drove him to travel to the most remote areas of the world, always looking for Arabian horses, which became his passion in the 1960s.

His professional travels led him to Egypt, and what was more natural than to visit the El Zahraa state stud there. It was similar with Hungary and Bábolna. In the 1960s he imported some horses from El Zahraa for Bábolna, later also for his own breeding. The decisive factor for this was his foundation mare Hanan, who gave him such important horses as Jamil and Salaa El Din.

Hans-Joachim Nagel has been breeding “Straight Egyptians” for 50 years. Through his breeding activities, but also as the former president of the VZAP and the WAHO and as a book author of various books on the Arabian horse, Dr. Nagel is highly regarded worldwide. We wish him that he can enjoy his horses, family and friends in good health for a long time to come.
